Vice President of Corporate Relations Candidates
Renee Yeung
Why are you running for this executive position?
I am deeply motivated to serve as Vice President of Corporate Relations because I believe SWE can provide important and unique opportunities to connect students with people from industry. My goal is for every person involved with SWE to feel supported and feel like they can contact or connect to someone who looks like them in a role they are interested in. Whether through the Peer Mentorship Program, Evening with Industry, diverse panels, or other events, I would love to be able to make SWE a strong community that fellow female engineers and other students can count on to have great events and create meaningful connections. I am also interested in serving as Treasurer because of my experience with being the SWE Representative for the Engineering Student Council (ESC). The ESC has opened my eyes to the resources that are available for SWE, and I would be love to ensure SWE is a thriving club.
What is your past involvement with SWE at UW?
I have really enjoyed being a part of SWE since my freshmen year. From getting to meet other women in STEM at general meetings to talk about SWE to recruiters at the reverse career fair, SWE has been a consistent inspiration and place full of wonderful people during my time here at UW. Since last year, as the SWE Representative for the Engineering Student Council, I have been able to take part in discussions about important topics and issues that the whole College of Engineering (COE) faces, including how we fund our engineering clubs and deciding what we want in the new Interdisciplinary Engineering Building. This has broadened my perspective on how SWE fits in in relation with other engineering clubs, and also how unique we are and how important SWE is to the engineering community. This has motivated me to want to pursue a leadership role at SWE in order to ensure that SWE is properly funded and is able to access the resources that the COE offers. This year, I am also part of the Industry Mentorship team, and this experience has been a lot of fun, both as a mentee and someone helping with the program. I would love to make the program more accessible to students, so that every student has an opportunity to have a mentor if they are interested, and that meetings can be flexible and engaging.
