The community outreach committee is dedicated to making STEM accessible and enjoyable to students from all backgrounds across Washington State through interactive, engaging, and inspiring programs and initiatives.

Role description:
Join a collaborative team dedicated to inspiring the next generation of engineers through hands-on STEM outreach. As a committee member, you will help design and implement interactive, engaging lessons that introduce core engineering concepts to students from underserved Title I middle schools in the Seattle area. Responsibilities include brainstorming ideas, developing lesson plans, preparing materials, and leading small groups of students through activities that promote creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking.
In addition to leading lessons, you’ll mentor and support other SWE members, assisting with outreach efforts, helping ensure a smooth and impactful experience for all involved. Strong communication skills, flexibility, and a passion for outreach are key, as is the ability to adapt when lessons don’t go as planned. Occasional travel (~ once per quarter) to the partner middle school is required to deliver and facilitate the lessons in person.
Expectations:
Attend SWE Monthly General Meetings.
Attend and be an active participant in team meetings
Attend in-person events once per quarter to deliver in-person lessons

Role Description:
Responsible for building connections with local Washington high schools by contacting science teachers, counselors, and other relevant staff through email. Follow up on communications to coordinate tours, mentorship programs, presentations, and more.
Expectations
Fast and reliable communication with high school staff, as well as relaying event details to the outreach team

Role Description:
Responsible for planning engaging events and activities. Connect with other RSOs to plan events as needed. Works closely with Outreach Coordinators and Content Creators to plan and coordinate event timelines and materials.

Role Description:
Responsible for developing materials to teach and engage with high schoolers about engineering and UW. Materials might include design presentations, handouts, and flyers for our outreach events. Works closely with Event Coordinators to plan materials.

Role Description:
The Major Chair supports first-year engineering students by providing opportunities to learn more about the engineering majors offered at UW. This includes:
Enthusiastically sharing experiences about their major, academics, and career paths.
Participating in panels, socials, and review sessions for ENGRUD placement.
Offering their contact information to answer questions throughout the year.
Being available to host virtual chats with students upon request.
Expectations:
Attend SWE Monthly General Meetings.
Attend 2 SWE events held by the Academic Directors: Dates TBD (estimating 1 event each for Winter and Spring Quarters).
Attend monthly meetings with SWE Academic Directors.
Answer ENGRUD questions via email and Slack as needed.
Be enthusiastic about your major and academic/career experiences!
Applicants are expected to build relationships with ENGRUDs and support them throughout their major exploration. They should be able to talk openly about their journey and inspire ENGRUDs to strive for success.
What you would gain:
Gain strong leadership skills (feature on resume, talking point for job interviews)
Develop communication skills related to your experiences (relevant for interviews, elevator pitches, etc.)
Foster a supportive SWE community in a low-commitment environment

Public Relations Committees

As a PR Committee Member, you will have the opportunity to explore and contribute to different aspects of PR. You will rotate between 3 different roles throughout the school year (1 per quarter), each with their own responsibilities:

Role description:
Create fun informational posters using Figma and Canva to advertise SWE events and opportunities
Lead the distribution of posters across UW’s campus
Keep track of poster requests to ensure that all deadlines are met
Communicate with graphics and social media teams to ensure advertising is spread evenly throughout all PR outlets
What you would gain:
Experience with and ownership over different PR outlets
Professional communication skills
Organizational skills and increased attention to detail
Increased creativity and innovative thinking

Role description:
Brainstorm ideas for TikTok based on current trends/events
Coordinate and film video content
Analyze what type of content performs well on social media platforms (ex. IG Reels, TikTok) and adjust posting plans accordingly
Work with social media directors to plan content based on posting schedules

Design a digital monthly newsletter to advertise SWE events and opportunities
Create and post monthly event recaps on LinkedIn
Brainstorm and post new ideas on LinkedIn to increase engagement
Communicate with graphics and social media teams to ensure advertising is spread evenly throughout all PR outlets
