Secretary Candidates

Why are you running for this executive position?

My past three years with SWE have been one of the most meaningful experiences in my college career. Not only have I learned technical skills such as designing marketing content on Figma as a Graphics Director, but I have also learned how to document ideas, communicate them effectively, and collaborate with people from diverse backgrounds. These skills are invaluable because they have helped me translate my ideas into tangible impact both within SWE marketing efforts, and outside of SWE through my involvement in leading design teams for HuskyADAPT. More importantly, as someone who experiences a lot of imposter syndrome within engineering, SWE has provided a sense of community for me that uplifts me and empowers me to challenge myself. I’m eager to deepen my involvement with SWE so that I can continue to create this safe space for future SWE members so they too are unafraid to take up space. As a rising senior, my time at SWE has taught me how to facilitate meetings, delegate tasks, and manage conflict. I want to apply what I have learned over the past few years to an Executive role to contribute to not only maintaining SWE operations but also breaking through barriers. If given the opportunity to be on the Executive team, I will make sure to advocate for SWE members by listening to their concerns and creating space for feedback. I would also love to push for more inclusive marketing campaigns that represent a diversity of student experiences across different mediums that cater to student needs. To any role, I bring my curiosity and undeterred desire to make a meaningful impact.

What is your past involvement with SWE at UW?

My involvement with UW SWE began my freshman year through attending general meetings. I found a great sense of belonging through meeting other women and non-binary engineers who were also carving their paths in their respective fields. It was this sense of community that inspired me to apply for and join a committee my sophomore year. I helped plan the End of Year Spring SWE Celebration. Throughout the year, I met with my team to identify potential venues, come up with decor ideas, and figure out catering options. Being on the planning committee helped me hone my event planning and organizational skills. I had never planned an event as large as the SWE celebration before. It was a daunting task but it deeply empowered me by showing me that I could do anything I put my mind to. It was also a rewarding experience and made me realize that I wanted to get more involved with SWE and contribute by utilizing my design skills in a meaningful way. Furthermore, I learned a lot from my team about the importance of delegating tasks and showing up for one another both at SWE and outside of SWE. This year, as a junior, I am one of the Graphics Directors for the Public Relations Team. I help design marketing content for Instagram and facilitate delegation of tasks within my committee. It has been a joyful experience to apply my design skills to a club that has been so meaningful to me and also get the chance to collaborate with such talented women who inspire me to be a better designer and engineer.
